Bleeding
Q: We recently adopted a 61/2 week old puppy.yesterday when he had a bowel movement we noticed he had worms.it is a long worm that coils up after it comes out. i have heard this is normal in new puppies. my main concern is that after the worm is passed, the pup will then pass a bit of ,what looks to us like blood.the people whom we got the puppy from had just given him worm medecine on wednesday, aug. 11 2004.we were hoping that you could tell us if this is normal or not. your input would be greatly appreciated.
A: I'm not sure what medicine he was given. however, a broad spectrum wormer is panacur-c. this medication is given once a day, based on the pet's weight, for 3 consecutive days.

A: We do carry clotrimazole cream that should give you the same results.

Pain/redness
Q: I have a dog that has red spots on her legs and they bleed and pus comes out. i have taken to her to the vet before but they said it was allergys but now its worse. her leg is swollen and it looks like maybe something is eating her leg...what kind of medicine should i get for her? i am gonna take her to the vet but i wanna get some medicine before i take her to the vet. thank you
A: Sounds like needs direct visual exam for right choice of antibiotic needed. in meantime try cleaning area with antibacterial soap as well as dress with calendula ointment from health food store a few times daily

Cat limping from old abcess injury
Q: Hi, my male neutered 12 yr old cat had a very deep abcess in his shoulder about 3 years ago. since then, he as developed a limp on that side and it seems to be getting progressivley worse. vet prescribed cosequin, (not the kind specificaly prescribed for cats)but i cain't see where that is helping? is there something else i should try? also, he smacks his lips a lot and seems to begin to gag sometimes latley as if he is nauseated. could this be from the cosequin or do i need to just give him more hairball medicine?
A: Could be from cosequin or other digestive disorder. hairballs are overdiagnosed as causes of this. should have blood work and thyroid to make sure everything is ok. could ask your vet about low dose metacam, which has been used successfully to treat painful arthritic cats

Hair loss
Q: I have a 5 month old puppie who is starting to lose some of his hair. we know that he has some fleas and bit hair off of his tail, but he also developed patches of hair loss on his leg and over his eye, and we haven't seen him scratching there, and the patches have spread recenctly. could these patches just be from fleas or is it mange? and could you recommend a good medicine to stop the hair loss? thank you
A: Could be just fromo flea bitet allergies and possibly mange as well or other allergies. vet visit and skin scrape at vet office only way to sort out

Cushings disease
Q: My pomerian has recently been diagnosed with cushings (adrenal). he is 11yrs old an is taking lysodren but after tests he is not in remission. he is also on phenobarb to keep him from having seizures. my vet seems very good but i would like another opinion please. my dog is very special and i want the best for him. thanks.
A: Lysodren is used in treating cushing's disease. other medicines used to treat the disease include anipryl and ketoconazole. lysodren is administered in a "loading" dose in the beginning of therapy and then is reduced during maintenance therapy. your veterinarian will determine the response to terapy using lysodren by performing blood tests. lysodren may reduce the effectiveness of phenobarbital. you should discuss this with your veterinarian.

Aggression
Q: I have a one year old yorkie-peke. he is very lovable and cuddly 95 % of the time. in the past few months, however, he has developed a severe aggression towards sudden movement of feet. for example, taking your foot to straighten a rug or stepping over him when he's in the doorway. he will fisciously attack your foot, no matter who it is. growling and biting. we have put him outdoors for the night, hit him with rolled up paper and scolded him by yelling. he immediately settles down as though nothing has happened, but will do it again weeks later. he has never been stepped on or kicked accidently that we know of. we have had him since he was eight weeks old. he was extremely ill with a virus when we got him (not parvo). he has not been nuetered. he weighs 12 lbs. is there anything we can do to teach him not to do this or is there medication that will help? do you think nuetering will help?
A: I would work wtih trainer or vet specialist in behavior one on one for behavior modification and to desensitize him to unwanted behavior. medicine not useful here

Excessive licking
Q: My year old lab has episodes of excessive licking. she will lick walls, chairs, carpets, hands, etc. without stopping. is this a possible anxiety reaction? she is a very nervous dog. how can i help her? she seems so fearful all the time. thanks you.
A: This excess licking problem is fairly common and not explainable by conventional vet medicine. not indicative of a specific disease or deficiency but sometimes homeopathic vets www.theavh.org can help with these issues. consider natural remedies for anxiety called flower essences. ones i would use are rescue remedy, aspen and mimulus which can all be used together(get at health food store) and can help fears long term
