Bleeding
Q: We recently adopted a 61/2 week old puppy.yesterday when he had a bowel movement we noticed he had worms.it is a long worm that coils up after it comes out. i have heard this is normal in new puppies. my main concern is that after the worm is passed, the pup will then pass a bit of ,what looks to us like blood.the people whom we got the puppy from had just given him worm medecine on wednesday, aug. 11 2004.we were hoping that you could tell us if this is normal or not. your input would be greatly appreciated.
A: I'm not sure what medicine he was given. however, a broad spectrum wormer is panacur-c. this medication is given once a day, based on the pet's weight, for 3 consecutive days.

Yeast infection in ear
Q: I have a 2 year old chihuahua/dachshund mix, who was diagnosed with a yeast infection in his ears a week and a half ago. he was prescribed doxycycline, tresaderm ear drops and otifoam ear wash. when i took him in, his ears were not red. now they are very inflamed and he is scratching at one of them a lot. i took him back to the vet yesterday and he said to finish up the doxy (5 pills left) and see how it goes. i'm wondering if this antibiotic could be causing a secondary yeast infection, since this is a known side effect. any advise would be appreciated. i hate to see my little boy like this.
A: I agree and doxycycine would not be my first choice for skin or ear problems as it can exascerbate yeast issues. ask vet about oral antifungal medicine like ketaconazole or itraconazole which might help. also have to address underlying causes of ear issues and yeast overgrowth such as allergies or problem will return

Tresaderm
Q: I have a 3 year old chiachua (sp) who was quite abused and had actually chewed her ears and paws to raw and bleeding. now after 2 years she still requires tresaderm about 2/4 times a month. ususally she begins with head flapping and i know to get out the tresaderm. cultures were all negative and no mites or fleas. if she continues to require this medication, is there some risk to her health? i do use the dermal soothe spray but usually if the head flapping has not stopped by day 2/3 i have to start giving her the tresaderm. is there another non prescription drug i can get for her? she is my first dog (at 55) and my best friend. ds
A: You need to see vet who will address underlying cause of ear problems such as food allergies or inhalent allergies or thyroid issues or it will keep coming back. see vet dermatologist if necessary. also dont like to use tresaderm like this long term due to resistant bacteria developing and systemic absorption of cortisone in the medicine over time. also check out website www.itsfortheanimals.com which has ointment known as blue ear ointment which you can buy ingredients in health food store and might work better long term

Why, frontline & heartgurad vx. revolution
Q: Why do you prefer frontline/advantix and a seperate heartwork medicine rather that the revolution combo?
A: In my experience the combination is more effective.

Flea help
Q: Is it safe to use flea medicine for dogs on cats? my friend has flea medicine for dogs, the type you apply on their back (liquid) and i cant afford any... someone told me you can break up a large dogs tube, and use it on multiple cats by measuring it with a syringe, then applying it like you would on a dog.. but she didnt know the amount to give a cat. this would be a tube for a 89+lb dog's flea medicine that i would be getting it from.. i have 3 cats ranging from 3 yrs to 1yr. please let me know if this is possible. thanks
A: No and no. you should never use medicine made for a dog on a cat. you should not split the applicators among multiple pets. you need to order the proper strength for the weight of the pet.

2 dogs and 1 cat possibly have worms
Q: I have 2 pugs and 1 cat. the only sign we've seen is a clear/white worm the size of a hangnail in the pets' water dish. we're pretty sure the cat has it because he is the only one that has not been updated on vaccinations and goes outside too. not sure if the dogs have them or not...but i want to be sure to get rid of them completely. should i give the dogs panacur? one is 23lbs and one is 26lbs, should they both get 2gram doses a day? and what med should i give my cat? also, is there anything else i can do? they were all recently given flea meds and bedding was washed, but want to make sure we get rid of them indefinitely. anything else i should do? my cat likes to go potty outside and inside in the litter box. also, i'm pregnant, should i be concerned for myself?
A: Panacure is fine but can likely getby with cheaper nemex from 1800petmeds. also consider1800petmeds tapeworm medicine as well incase those.
