Test
Q: Do you have to test your dog again for heart worm medicine if he has not taken it a while? before you can start him on it again?
A: That would be the prudent thing to do. i assume you have some product on hand, because a veterrinarian would not order a prescription where there had not been continuity of treatment.
How do i know if my dog has worms?
Q: I have 2 aussie puppies, almost a year old. when they were getting their shots last fall, every time i brought them to the vet, they told me that they had worms and they gave me a very expensive medicine. i really don't want to bring them back there since it will probably cost me over $150.00 i would like to know if i can tell if the puppies have worms myself. i have been thinking that they might because their bowel movements are very loose, almost mush, like mashed potatoes. is it supposed to be like this or should it be a lot firmer? they eat 2 meals of dry food a day with a little scoop of canned added in the morning. thanks for any help. margie
A: Loose stools can be due to many things besides worms. you can't tell if your pups have worms in many cases without a microscopic exam at your vet looking for eggs. i would drop a stool sample off at your vet which should not cost an arm and leg. if negative you could try change in diet to all natural diet like california natural lamb and rice diet by natura pet foods as well as adding digestive enzymes like prozyme to diet. if problem persists, then need more of a workup at your vet.

Ithcy skin
Q: My puppy is almost a year old. he has a rash on his tummy. he has been crying for about two days all ready and rolls on the floor so the carpet can help him scratch of the itchness an the vet has not yet gave me any medicine for his rash. what should i do? or what do u recommend?
A: You can give your pet benadryl (diphenydramine -sku 10246) at a dose of 1/2 mg per lb twice a day. this should control the itch.
Kennel cough
Q: I was wondering which antibiotic was used in treating kennel cough. i also read somewhere about giving your dog people aspirin or people cough medicine. is this ok & if so what would you use and what doses & would this help? i have three dogs here to treat for kennel cough and i know it could get expensive & i have little money. my neighbor brought her dog here when her dog had kennel cough. i'm upset w/that as now i have three dogs w/kennel cough to treat. thank you, any home remedy would help in cost. deb
A: Put all on vitamin c in form of ester c at|500 mg to 1000 mg twice daily to help their immune system. you could try doses of children's robitussin over a few days only. antibiotic of choice is doxycycline at 2.5 mg per pound of dog twice daily. need prescription for this however.

A: Needs to go to vet to have skin scrape to make sure not parasites but likely allergies and needs internal treatment with medicines rather than topical ones they lick off
Clarify nemex
Q: I read a post where you suggested using nemex for cats and kittens. then later another post that it has not been fda approved for cats but for dogs only. can you clarify this for me as i was looking to purchase for my felines. thank you
A: Many meds and drugs have fda listings only for dogs. another excellent example is otomax the popular antibiotic and antinflammatory for ear infections. however commonly used safely in cats as well. also many drugs we use in vet medicine have human studies and labels only such as digoxin for heart problems
