Heartworm medicine that dog will not eat
Q: My dog will not eat the heartworm medicine that i tried to give him several times. i have put it in treats and fruit but he will not eat it. is there a liquid medicine or an injection that i can give him? i live in a very wooded area. any help would be appreciated. thank you.
A: If you are using heartgard plus chewtabs, try cutting it into small slices. if crushable tablets, do so and mix in food. if none of the above work, purchase a pet piller from us.

Dalmation coughing
Q: My dog is 9 years old. she has been to the vet regularly, she has a cough at least two to three times a day and when she coughs-she will also act as if she is going to throw up, but does not get anything out. so far my vet has no answers. please help.
A: Sounds like tracheonbronchitis, which is inflammation of her airways. most likely allergic/inflammatory but occasionally have secondary infections with it. if antibiotic trial with a medicine like doxycycline does not help you could consider chest rads and cbc to rule out infections as well as other diagnostics by specialists like transtracheal washes. most of these cases end up being allergic in origin and respond best to meds like low dose pred and bronchodilators like aminophylline to dilate airways. however i would proceed step by step as i outlined. also don't forget about testing her for heartworms and intestinal worms, and make sure she is on heartworm medicine.
Leaking urine
Q: I have an 8 year old sshepard mix female that leaks urine when she sleeps or relaxes. my vet put her on a capsule, d.e.s. sheba takes one capsule weekly. does she have to stay on this med for ever? is there anything else i can give her to help, and are there any side effects from being on this medicine for long periods of time?
A: Although they teach us in vet school that estrogen can cause cancerous changes and breast changes, etc i have not found any problems with long term use of low doses like this indefinitely and have not had one case of complications. in fact if you think about it, when we spay dogs and remove all sources of female hormones, there is definitely a negative effect on body as any woman who goes through menopause or has a hysterictomy and hormone replacement will tell you.
Pain/redness
Q: I have a dog that has red spots on her legs and they bleed and pus comes out. i have taken to her to the vet before but they said it was allergys but now its worse. her leg is swollen and it looks like maybe something is eating her leg...what kind of medicine should i get for her? i am gonna take her to the vet but i wanna get some medicine before i take her to the vet. thank you
A: Sounds like needs direct visual exam for right choice of antibiotic needed. in meantime try cleaning area with antibacterial soap as well as dress with calendula ointment from health food store a few times daily
Kennel cough?
Q: My 11 month old boston terrier has been to the vet two weeks ago and treated for kennel cough (though they said it could be virus) she was put on antibiotics and cough medicine...syptoms went away in 3 days although now it seems that the symptoms have returned is this possible. i did screw up and forgot the antibiotic on the 6 and 7 the day but gave them to her when i returned home..did i cause it to come back? does she need to go back to the vet or can i wait out this bout of cough?
A: It is possible that by not giving the full course of antibiotic that the condition did come back. the best recourse is to have the veterinarian re-examine the pet.
Stinky doxie
Q: My wiener dog smells like an old gym shoe, even within hours of being bathed at the groomers. in the spring of 2003 i took her to the vet bcuz she had sores on her belly and legs that bled and he was constantly scratching. she also smelled bad but the sores concerned her father and i. she was given an antibiotic and some shampoo as well as some tests to check her urinary tract. she didn't stink while she was taking the pills but then started up again when they were gone. it cost over $200 and then we had to do it again this year in the spring. i was given another shampoo, more medicine, and some expensive dog food to give her. i got the same result, the sores cleared up, and her stink left only during the course of the antibiotics. now we see sores coming back and can't afford to have her tested again, only to have her problem return. can you help?
A: This is classic case of treating symptoms witthout addressing underlying allergy causes. will cost you more but better solution long term. work with vet or vet dermatologist who will look at potential underlying seasonal inhalent allergies through blood or skin testing to get to bottom of issue or as you see it will recur
Why, frontline & heartgurad vx. revolution
Q: Why do you prefer frontline/advantix and a seperate heartwork medicine rather that the revolution combo?
A: In my experience the combination is more effective.
